The following poem is extracted from a novel, entitled A
Description of Modern Life, said to have been written by a
lady. She appears to have had just ideas of the subject
which employed her pen. By inserting it in your paper you
may perhaps oblige some of your fair readers, and will
afford a sensible pleasure to your old correspondent
Candidus.
THE DUTY OF A WIFE.
Ye tuneful nine, my artless lay inspire,
With energy, and true poetic fire!
Sweet prudence thy unerring art display,
And thou, fair wisdom lend a bright'ning ray!
. . . [3 lines]
Attempt the duty of a wife to sing.
